Leader: Camps Bay
My name is Susan and I moved to Cape Town in 2011 from Hong Kong. I have always been pretty active and health conscious but felt I could never run, as I would be completely breathless every time I attempted it. In my mind, running was for the super fit. Fast-forward to now and I think the above statement is so ridiculous, everyone can run. It does not matter how fast or slow you run, its about your mind set and motivation. I cannot imagine my world without running.
I love running, it has become my thing, my escape and my time to think and unwind. Running was instrumental in helping me recover and conquer post natal depression after having my daughter in 2016. It was a very tough and emotionally draining time for me (and my family) but once I started running again, I felt so much better and I always felt more ready to face any challenges I was experiencing, especially the demands of motherhood. There is so much about motherhood that no one tells you about, or how hard it is or that at times you might feel as if you are about to loose your mind. My running group became my therapy, the people I could confide in and confess all my fears and concerns to. Most mornings the km’s flew by as we chatted, cried, encouraged and uplifted each other.
There is nothing quite like a ‘runners high’ or that feeling of achievement when you receive a medal at the end of a race, it’s pretty amazing. The people you meet along the way, the supporters, everything adds to the amazing running community, it’s like a whole new family. My advice, lace up those trainers and get out there, you will not regret it.
