I’m that girl , if you came to me with a problem, I would give you a pair of running shoes. I’m always running ‘away’ my friends tell me. But in all honesty, I just believe in sports and it’s positive effects to the mind, body and soul. I love staying active and I’m always raising my hand to do something active. I’ve been running ‘away’ since 2013 and I stopped in 2015.
2015 was also the year I got on a plane to run the TCS New York City Marathon in my lowest fitness due to being too paranoid to train after a common injury. I wanted to quit running and take up knitting (Which I did try, and it was an epic fail) .
March of 2016 , a friend sat me down and counseled me. And May 2016 , I put on those shoes that I had stacked away and went for a 5km walk, which became a run, and before I knew it , I was back in my groove. I was so deep in the paranoia to run and other personal issues, that I had forgotten how much of a coping mechanism running was.
2016 ended with a bang and became the highlight of my year. I bought a mountain bike in June of that year and 5 months later, November 20th, I was at the start line of the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge (94,7km Road Cycle challenge). Also, In the same month, just 2 weeks before my first cycle challenge, I was in cloud 9 for completing my first 42km, South African marathon, the humbling Soweto Marathon. It was an emotional day. Also, in the same month I finished my first RAC CityLodge ToughOne 32km.
In the build up to these 3 races, I realized how far I can challenge myself and how easy it was to overcome my fear and paranoia and I was amazed at how well I coped with personal issues. I am stronger than I have ever been and Running has also helped me come out my shell and I can make friends easier now.
Now I’m on a journey to my first Comrades Marathon in 2017 and I want to inspire all woman who think you need to be super fast to enter the Comrades Marathon – A sexy Sub-finish pace can also get you there. Outside running, I love art – I collect art and I love going to exhibitions.
I enjoy walks and hikes, traveling and photography.
